This page quickly describes how to make a peer-to-peer crossover cable for a 10Base-T ethernet. The cable will allow you to either connect two computers together, or cascade hub units. The first thing you will need to do is get a network card working properly in each computer. (If you are here at Penn State, and are already on the network, this step is done.) If you still have to purchase a pair of ethernet cards, just remember one thing. You get what you pay for. If you buy a $20 ethernet card, you get a $20 ethernet card, and that's it. I've found that if you want a card that works well, and is easy to configure, the lowest you'll be paying is $60 for each. Each ethernet card is different to configure, so consult your owners manual for instructions. The next thing you will need is either twisted pair cable or an inline coupler. The first diagram shows how the cable is normally wired.
The second diagram shows how the wires need to be switched. Only the four wires shown are used for a 10Base-T ethernet.
The inline coupler version is very easy to make. It is just a matter of switching the four indicated wires and removing the other remaining four. This coupler will cost you between $2 and $5.
